• Turn-in: Please the assignment (via single zipped file via Moodle) on or before 5 pm of
the due date.
• Legibility: Please use a word processor hand written material will not be accepted.
• Plagiarism: All referenced material must be detailed – failure to do so will result in a
zero mark for the course work.
• Late policy: Written work turned in after the deadline will be penalized by 15% and a
further 5% per day late.
• Marks Allocated: Assignment1 is worth 25% of the overall mark.
Milling Component
Part A
Generate the NC code for a milled component. Using AutoCAD develop an engineering standard
drawing of the component. The design should entail the following:
– Part should be 70 cm × 70 cm × 20 cm aluminium component.
– Engineering standard drawing should include all relevant views, sectional views, have all
dimensions, and location of machining datum clearly defined.
– A milling process plan must also be defined – as detailed on next page. Roughing and
finishing cycles are expected – feeds and speeds should reflect this.
– Manually generate the NC code to machine the designed part using the standard tool list
detailed below.
– Input NC code into AlphaCAM software and include in final submission.
– Include an explanation of important aspects of code in appendix of final report.
Standard Tooling List
T02 (8 mm) diameter end mill
T03 (14 mm) diameter end mill
T04 (5 mm) diameter drill
The design should include an AutoCAD drawing in first angle projection showing all hidden
detail. The final assignment submission should include a txt file, and final simulation on
AlphaCAM. Marks given for novel design and additional physical features.

Assignment 1
(50 marks)
Part B
Using subroutines and/or loops, generate a program that machines four of components in part A
out of a single billet. Note – datum shifts should not be used. Submission should include:
– Drawing of proposed layout (dwg)
– Manually written NC code to machine the designed part using the standard tool list as
above.
– Include an explanation of important aspects of code in appendix of final report.
– Use AMIMA software to verify code by defining billet file, tool file, and txt file

Turning Component
Part C
Using AutoCAD develop an engineering standard drawing of a turning component. The design
should entail the following:
– Part should be 30mm diameter and 80mm long.
– Engineering standard drawing should include all relevant views, sectional views, have all
dimensions, and location of machining datum clearly defined (front face of the job).
– The tool list used in the turning process plan may be used as the tool list.
The design should include an AutoCAD drawing in first angle projection showing all hidden
detail. The final assignment submission should include a txt file, and final simulation on
AlphaCAM. Marks given for novel design, additional physical features and removed where the
material is damaged by the tool.
(25 marks)
Turning Process Plan Example
Submissions should include a report detailing all aspects of the project (including screen shots of
the program(s) running and a soft copy of the relevant program files zipped and inserted to
Moodle. Candidates will be asked to run the program and give a brief explanation of how it
works – a zero grade will be given if you fail to demonstrate the programs.
