Historical understanding involves more than simply storing factual information about who did what where when. It involves a critical approach to the past – what influences how people think about the past, how it’s portrayed, and for what purposes. Remember, “critical” does not necessarily mean “negative”; it means questioning the reasons for why things are rather than passively accepting that “that’s just the way things are” or “that’s the way things have always been.”
Write an essay that explains ways that this course emphasized a critical approach to historical understanding.
