Your essay must consistently argue a specific thesis.

Please use simple vocabulary and grammar. Thanks.

Your essay must consistently argue a specific thesis. You will derive your thesis from a close reading of one of the poems listed below. You will analyze how the poem uses figurative language and poetic form to contribute to the poem as a whole. Figurative language includes image, motif, simile, metaphor, analogy, and symbol as well as any other literary techniques that you can identify. Poetic form includes rhyme, meter, layout on the page, alliteration/assonance, and repetition as well as any other formal techniques that you can identify. The textbook contains extra information about terms and techniques. Use it to your benefit!

Remember that explaining the whole poem is not your responsibility. Instead choose one or two interesting or prominent examples, and make a single assertion that applies to both of those examples (i.e., a thesis). Treat the text like a machine with parts; tell me what those parts do, not just what they say. Do not provide a list of examples. A list is not an argument. Instead, formulate a thesis that helps explain just a few examples. Your goal is to analyze a couple of examples in depth.
