Look at the template in advance of beginning the assignment to see where you should concentrate your efforts. The proposal is designed to have you identify and briefly describe a tourism problem somewhere within the region given in the proposal template (Europe and Mediterranean region). Be specific about the kind of impact (i.e., environmental, economic or social and the particular tourist resource or destination you are concerned with. The proposal requires you to include some preliminary discussion of the cause of the problem (i.e., what is it about the interaction of tourists and the tourist resource or the destination community that helps to explain the problem). The proposal also asks you to identify and briefly describe the planning or management solution to the problem that you will evaluate. Recall that it is important to select a solution that is logically related (i.e., relevant) to the problem as you have defined it. Suggest how you will evaluate that solution. List and justify several criteria that you will use to determine how ?good? that solution is.
Your proposal must be properly referenced. The scientific style is recommended, for example (Furlong 2008) or (Tratalos and Austin 2010, 70), denoting the page number when quoting directly. With this system of referencing, list all items alphabetically by author in the ?References List" section of the proposal. See the sample citations at the end of this outline. Other examples are found in the course manual, on the course website and in your course textbook. Internet references and .pdf documents consulted must include the complete URL (web address), and indicate the date accessed.
Along with the proposal, and separate from its Reference List, provide five annotated references that will support your final paper. This forms the Annotated Bibliography. An annotation is a complete bibliographic citation and a three or four sentence summary of the work. Arrange the five sources alphabetically by author. The Annotated Bibliography may include some or all of the references you cite in the proposal section. Be sparing in your use of non-academic sources. E-books, e-journals and most online government documents are equivalent to their hard copies. Here is an example of an annotated citation:
Tralalos, J.A. and T.J. Austin. 2001. Impact of recreational SCUBA diving on coral communities of the Caribbean island of Grand Cayman. Biological Conservation 102:67-75.
This article presents the results of a field investigation of three high use and three low use dive sites on reefs in the West Bay area of Grand Cayman. Diver numbers and distance from diving buoys showed highly significant adverse effects on hard coral cover, and also on the amount of dead coral and coral rubble. A new management approach is needed if the ecological and aesthetic qualities of coral reefs are to be conserved.
