These notes together with the booklet WRITING ABOUT MOVIES is all about film criticism. Instead of the usual quiz and question class work, the students will write a
3 to 5 page film analysis of a movie of their own choosing. Students should consult the booklet WRITING ABOUT MOVIES that accompanies the text book for guidelines
for this assignment. Additionally Chapters 1 – 3 provide examples for how a film should be analyzed.
As noted in the syllabus once this project is graded you will have the opportunity to re-write and re-submit your work for a better grade.
The gist of the paper is to talk about the abstract concepts contained in the film and how the elements of the film production help to develop, emphasize, or
otherwise symbolize these ideas. Students should provide examples from the film that best demonstrate what the film makers intentions were.
Some possible ideas for such papers would include some of the following examples:
Students can examine the romantic ideals expressed in such films as THE NOTEBOOK, SENSE AND SENSIBILITY, CHASING AMY, PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, LITTLE WOMEN, FAILURE TO
LAUNCH, or any other romantic comedy.
Students can demonstrate what the various science fiction films have to say about contemporary culture. In the 1950’s sci fi was all about fears of communism
(INVASION OF THE BODYSNATCHERS) and nuclear ration (GODZILLA). In the 21st Century sci fi films reflect our pessimism about a future adversely affected by our poor
ecological decisions. Is a film like DAY AFTER TOMORROW just bad science or is it an allegory of something else?
Contact me if you are curious about how your ideas might fulfill this assignment. I will return your papers to you with comments on them and if they are submitted
in time, students may re-submit them for a better grade.
Extra Credit Paper: Students can write a second film analysis paper for a maximum of 100 points of extra credit. The criteria is the same as noted above.
