He knows that you are working on an advanced degree in information technology and he wants you to come down to his company to discuss an opportunity.
His company employees anywhere from 200 to 300 people at any given time. These people work as information technology and software engineering consultants in many government installations around the Washington area. They also have placed some of their people with larger government contractors such as Lockheed Martin and Hughes.
The company is interested in replacing their old time and billing system. The requirements document for the system were created by another company who ultimately gave them a price tag of almost $1 million to do the work. Lonnie has asked you to come to his company to work up a proposal that would do the work for half the cost, $480,000. He proposes that there are three ways that you might accomplish this.
The first way would be for you to set up a project where you work inside the company as a temporary employee for a 3 to 5 months, while you manage the development of the system by an offshore company in India. If you are successful at doing this, Lonnie is convinced that they will hire you full-time and you will have a six-figure salary with the company.
The second way also involves you becoming a temporary employee of the company for 3 to 5 months. In this scenario, you would do the project just as proposed above, only instead of having the work done by an offshore company, you complete the work by using employees at Lonnie’s company.
In the third scenario you take the $480,000 and create your own company. You hire employees, and build the system yourself.
*****Lonnie has asked that you submit 4 pages proposal detailing which of these scenarios you would employ to complete this task, while explaining why you didn’t choose the other two scenarios. He’s not asking you to lay out the project management at this point, but rather to talk about which proposed path of the three mentioned above you would prefer to use.
