Susan owns a shop selling sports goods. On Saturday 1st March she places an advertisement in the local paper, “Special purchase, new ‘Unique’ full sets of
golf clubs – normally £1000 – now £750 only until the end of March. Contact me during business hours at the shop in person, by phone or by email. The clubs
must be sold. Payment by cash only.”
By Friday 28th March, Susan has sold all her stock of ‘Unique’ clubs so she arranges for an advert to appear in the paper on Saturday 29th saying that the
deal is no longer available.
On Thursday 27th March Tahir has posted a letter “accepting Susan’s great offer” and enclosing a cheque for £750. Tahir’s letter is delivered on Monday
31st March.
Alice also sent a letter on the 27th saying that she would have a set of clubs if a golf bag and putter was included. This letter arrived on Friday 28th.
On Friday evening a friend told Alice what a good deal the clubs were so Alice sent an email at midnight on Friday saying she would have the clubs for £750
in any event. Susan read the email on Saturday afternoon.
Emma did not see the advert on Saturday 29th and sent an email at 5.15pm on Monday 31st saying she would have a set of clubs for £750. Susan had already
gone home as her shop closed at 5.00pm on Monday to Wednesday although Thursday – Saturday it was open until 8.00pm.
