1. In your lifetime, you have learned many things. One of these was learning to tie your shoelaces. Use your experience to illuminate the following topic: what happens when learning takes place? be sure to include and explain:
a. The three things that facilitate learning (surprise, contiguity, contingency etc)
b. the two kinds of learning (conditioning) and how they differ. Be sure to define all your terms, including reinforcers, punishers, etc. Use your example to illustrate both kinds of learning. (classical and operant)
c. Include a memory diagram showing the kinds of long-term memory into which your learning can be divided. Indicate the brain areas involved with each. (episodes, emotional memory, skill etc)
d. Finally, tell me how your brain establishes the new connections that constitute your learning. Be sure to insure how the hippocampus works while you are awake and when you are asleep, and what happens during REM and NREM sleep.
2. Sight and sounds reach your neo-cortex by different but related routes. The relation is the path along which external stimuli are augmented and finally transduced into neural impulses.
a. To show the similarities, produce parallel (one above the other) diagrams of the route from distal stimulus to transduction in the eye and the ear.
b. Label each part on the diagram and describe its function in your accompanying essay.
In class we use the book: Discovering psychology by Hockenbury and Hockenbury but no citation needed here. It would make sense that the first essay should be longer. The other is just a diagram labeling the parts and its functions. I will upload my friends essay from last essay so you can have a look to get some kind of idea. I will also upload class notes which is what we mostly supposed to be based on. Let me know if you have any other questions.
