Part 1: A Plague Of Tics

The plot of the short story A Plague of Tics, by David Sedaris is centered around the somewhat peculiar actions of a young boy. His condition is something that most people would recognize as autism or aspergers these days. He is constantly haunted by little voices in his head compelling him to perform tiny little actions throughout the day, and he has no understanding of why those around him are disturbed by his actions. His “tasks” that he must complete every day range from licking the light switches in his math classroom much to the dismay of his teacher, Miss Chesnut, to rearranging the appliances in his kitchen. In his mind these things he simply must do are not causing any harm, but they provide a very clear introduction to conflict as he annoys his family and teachers. He claims to know that there is a button in his mind that he can turn off to stop all the nonsense, but he cannot find it, and he hates his mind sometimes.
Overtime, his issues continue, as a form of rising action, and his tasks become more complicated, pushing himself and those around him to the edge. One time he was driving with his father, and his dad threatened that if he touched his nose to the windshield one more time, he would regret it. Sure enough, he leaned up to the glass one more time, and his dad was provoked to slam on the brakes so he smashed his nose into the windshield. His only response to the pain was that the pain from “A blow to the nose can be positively narcotic” (213). Following this incident, the young boy finds that hurting himself can provide the same satisfaction as his tasks that he must complete every day. This may be seen as a sort of climax, but another possibility could be when he goes off to college and has forced interaction with his roommate. He learns how to deal with things to mold around others, because he has finally started to realize that he will fit in better if he hides some of his tasks, or postpones them at least. As a resolution in the story, the main character has finally learned how to handle his compulsions, and however unfortunately due to drugs and alcohol, he no longer feels the need to complete his tasks at all.
Part 2: Assimilation

The story of “Assimilation,” may give a reader huge shock and confusion about the main character Mary Lynn who is an Indian. Sherman Alexie mentions about her many times with his clear details, yet as you keep reading, it is such an impulsive story.
There is only one specific image of Mary Lynn –Disgusting—She will not give good impression to any audiences who is reading this story because all she does in the story is to have love affair with indigenous stranger. All the ideas which came up in my head as reading through were that Mary Lynn is having sex with men all the time. How shameful it is. She seems has brain only about having relationship with men. The image of Mary Lynn is this. Mary Lynn is trouble maker. She is a liar because she is cheating on her husband, does not care anything about it even though she has kids, she was perhaps party girl when she was young and still she is partying, easy Indian lady, careless woman, as long as she can get everything she wants, she is happy, such a drama queen, and she is probably a boring person because all she can do to satisfy herself is to have sex. She does not give enough love and spend more time with her kids or her husband because she needs love from somebody else, not from her family which sounds really strange. She is not afraid of anything.
This entire negative image came into my mind during the reading; however, it helps more to develop the image of Mary Lynn why she does this. Even though she sounds not nice, why does Alexie states about Mary Lynn so much with his astonishing information? She probably did not receive love from her parents when she was small. She feels lonely, wanting people to love her more and possibly she is not good at expressing her feelings towards to somebody. She thinks she knows, but she does not know the real meaning of “love.”
