Write an essay, five to six pages in length, in which you support an interpretative argument by comparing and contrasting two of the six assigned novels (at least one of which must be from the contemporary period) and carefully analyzing pertinent passages from both novels. This assignment calls for a close reading paper, so the bulk of your essay should focus on your own examination of the passages that best support your argument; this is not a research paper, so you should not need to do outside research or quote experts to support your interpretations. Close reading entails not only quoting pertinent lines and referencing specific details from the text, but also explaining how the literary techniques being employed support your particular interpretations. Your essay should also include a thesis that offers both an arguable claim and the evidence that will be used to support it. If you choose to write about a novel you explored in your short essay, be sure that you do not use any of the same ideas or content; copying any of your own work from a previous essay is a form of plagiarism. Be sure to follow MLA format and documentation guidelines to cite all of your sources.
Traumatic Fragments and Flashbacks: Many novels of the modern and contemporary periods experiment with non-linear organization to make their narratives more representative of lived experience, especially in response to traumas, cultural or personal. Explore how two assigned novels use such formal innovation to more accurately represent the complexity of traumatic aftermath.
