Additional Files include work by Walt Whitman and Ernest Hemingway
Whitman and Hemmingway, like Thoreau and Emerson, were concerned with the individual and the modern world. With the coming of the industrial revolution, the individual simply looked small. Preserving the individual in the face of technological change, particularly those producing the new horrors of industrial-age warfare, thematically permeates the work of Whitman.
We face the same problems today; perhaps they are even worse. The pace at which technological change happens today is staggering. How we keep our individuality in the face of this kind of rapid technical change is a question for us today, as much as or more so than it was for Whitman in his time.
Having said all that, let’s talk about the computer.
What is the most important challenge for YOU in today’s computer environment? How does it affect your individuality and sense of selfhood? Think about things such as:
• Identity theft
• Online dating
• instant messaging
• email
• workflow oversight on computers
• email monitoring and computer privacy
Obviously, this list is far from complete.
