An Excel data file has been uploaded (MNB106-Assignment-DATA FILE 3-03.11.13.xls). Download this file and give it the following name: 800283.MNB106.ASSIGNMENT3 (for example 123456.MNB106.ASSIGNMENT 3).
The DATA file has two sheets titled ASSIGNMENT and CALCULATION. Open the data file, and enter 800283 into cell A1 within the sheet titled ASSIGNMENT. Please save this file and use this data set. You will now have a personalised and unique data set that reflects the total number of customers entering a small hardware shop for each day of the week for 40 weeks, from the end of January onwards. You are asked to produce a report on the data which should include the following:
Section 1: Analysis of the available data
• Summary statistics such as the mean and standard deviation for each day of the week.
• Graphical summaries (e.g. histograms, boxplots, scatterplots), including a graph which contrasts the different days of the week.
• Evidence for possible trends over time in the data for the different days.
• In most cases, what happens on one day is independent of what happens on another day: show that this is not true for Tuesday and Thursday by producing an appropriate graph.
• A written summary of the commercial activity for each day of the week, based on the summary statistics and graphs above (word limit between 500 – 800 words)
Include in your investigation a histogram and a time-series plot of the Wednesday data and try to relate aspects of the two graphs produced.
Section 2: The Strategic Management Report
The shop has a staff of three including the shop manager. She is considering the possibility of either (a) closing the shop for a day or half-day or (b) reducing the staff on a particular day or half-day.
On the basis of the data and the analysis you produced in Section 1, write a summary (approximately between 500 – 800 words) that will present your recommendations to the manager. Qualify your answer with comments on any other information that might be required in order to validate your recommendations.
