You are required to develop a Product Design Process Strategy and demonstrate the quantitative design management techniques within it by application to an example product.
Decide on a product of your own choosing, then work through the design development process utilising quantitative product design management techniques to demonstrate and document your understanding of managing the concept and embodiment stages of a design project. Cover the spectrum of product design from initiation to completion of embodiment design. Critically evaluate the techniques used and justify your choices where alternatives may have been considered.
Appraise how documented quantitative techniques can assist in managing product design and enable quality assurance and enhancement. Research appropriate literature in the field to provide evidence to justify your conclusions.
This assignment will assess the following module learning outcomes:
Knowledge and Understanding
1. Demonstrate a detailed understanding of design for manufacture, product development concepts and methods, design lifecycle, tools and techniques in the context of the management of product design and development
2. Evaluate appropriate techniques, concepts and approaches as an aid to solving challenges in the context of product design development and lifecycle management.
Cognitive & Intellectual Skills
3. Critically appraise current practice(s) and comment on strengths and weaknesses using balanced, logical and supported arguments.
4. Identify key areas of product design analysis and choose appropriate methods for their solution in a considered manner.
Key Transferable Skills
7. Select and apply a range of tools and techniques to solve product design problems;
8. Demonstrate competency in the knowledge of principles of Product Design and Development
