Local Food Investigation: Uncovering hidden Food Costs
For the purpose of discovering what foods are the most staple in your diet, keep a food journal for a few days – or at least long enough to identify 3 or 4 foods you eat most consistently.
(Banana, Potatoes, Pork-loin, White Rice) For each of these foods, learn where it comes from, how it is produced and by whom.
A. What can you learn about the companies who grow and/or produce these foods? (From websites, packages, Google, library sources).
B. What is involved in the processing? If there are several ingredients on the label, how do all of these ingredients come together and how many times must they travel before the final destination?
C. Is any of the ingredients subsidized by the farm bill? (If economy goes into your choice of this food as a staple in your diet, and some ingredients are subsidized, how do corporate lobbyists influence your food choices, or do they?)
D. How much energy does it take to bring each food to your table? (you can calculate this by multiplying the number of miles each ingredient travels, first to the site of production and then to your local market, by the price of fuel)
