Paper One Assignment Your writing project for Paper One is to write two descriptions (Part A) and an analysis/ reflection on your descriptions (Part B). Find a place to observe and describe. You might consider: – a place dealing with recreation or entertainment—can include people – a place where there are “things” but few if any people, e.g., museum, quad at night – a place where people are working – a place where people are not having a good time – a place that is not easy to find Part A – Positive and Negative Descriptions Spend ten or twenty minutes at your place, taking notes in preparation for writing a focused description of the scene that will enable your readers to see what you see. You must write twodescriptions of the scene. Your first description must convey a favorable impression of the scene, making it appear pleasing or attractive. The second description must convey a negative or unfavorable impression, making the scene appear unpleasant or unattractive. Both descriptions must describe the same scene from the same location at the same time. (You may not visit once while it’s raining and once while it’s sunny). Avoid places that check ID at the door. Do not write about a venue featuring exotic entertainment, a place where illegal activities are occurring, or a gambling establishment. Please do not disclose information about your alcohol consumption – use good judgment. Each description should be at least 200 words. Part B – Reflection and Rhetorical Analysis Analyze what you have learned from doing this assignment. This reflection should include a rhetorical analysis of your own two descriptions as well as give some specific insight into what you’ve learned about “angle of vision.” Your analysis should discuss your use of the methods of shaping perception and strategies for creating angles of vision that we have covered in this unit. Use the vocabulary and concepts of the unit, and point to specific passages and examples from your Part A where appropriate. This section should be at least 500 words.
