3 to 5 minutes INFORMATIVE SPEECH

The speech will be evaluated on extemporaneousness, eye contact, (not reading cards) movement/gestures, voice and the incorporation of the visual aid. (see Appendix following Chapter 3)

Objective: The purpose of this assignment is to effectively research, organize, and deliver an informative speech to your audience. Extemporaneous delivery is required for this speech. In an informative speech you are acting as a teacher by relating content to your audience in an objective manner. A visual aid is required for this speech. . You will be required to submit a full content outline (see Chapter 10 in your textbook) using the “outline” platform at the Connect Lucas web site. In your outline you should list the resources you incorporated for the speech.

This speech makes up 20% of my grade. So please do it well.

Procedures: You are to prepare a 3:00 to 5:00 minute speech on a topic of your choosing. A detailed preparation outline, audience analysis (CAN BE FOUND IN THE BOOK WHAT THAT IS) and reference list with a minimum of three sources must be submitted.

Step 1: Choose an academically challenging topic (LET ME KNOW WHEN YOU HAVE CHOSEN)

Step 2: Begin your research trying to answer a specific question about the topic. Keep in mind that you need a minimum of 3 sources for full credit on the speech.
A note on sources: You may use electronic sources but avoid web-based sources. Wikipedia.org may not be used as a reference for your speeches!

Step 3: Formulate your specific purpose statement and central idea.

Step 4: Prepare a detailed outline of your speech. Be sure to include a thorough description of your topic in the introduction.

Step 5: Write your audience analysis and compile your reference list.

Step 6: Create your visual aid. 2 -3 Power Point slides may be used for this presentation as a visual aid. Other visual aids such as posters, graphs, photos, etc. may not be used. (see Chapter 13)

A note on visual aids: You must include PowerPoint slides with this speech. While giving the speech you must show the slides. Since I will not be able to see the slides up close please send them to me separately so I can look at them while you show them.
