Traditions and Encounters: (Chapters 26-30)
Part I. One Essay on THREE Key Terms. Choose three terms from the BOLDED terms in the handouts from Chapters 26-30 that you see as RELATED to each other. Write an essay of about one and one half pages, using the THREE chosen terms. Show how all three terms RELATE to a particular concept or major event we are studying. Include THREE pictures to go with this essay and briefly EXPLAIN how each picture adds to our understanding.
Part II. Write essays of about one and one half pages each on THREE of the topics below. Please make sure the information you share in Part II is completely DIFFERENT from what you wrote about in Part I. If you want to, you may include pictures to reinforce the key points in your essays.
1. East Asia. Explain some of the changes in China and Japan, or nearby areas, in the era of 1500-1800. What do you find remarkable about this region? How would you describe the relationship of East Asia to other parts of the world in this era?
2. Islamic Empires. Describe each of the Islamic societies in Chapter 27. What factors helped make these empires successful? What factors were driving change in these areas? Do you see these three empires as part of the same trend, or are they really three very different stories?
3. Comparing Societies. Compare one of the East Asian societies discussed in Chapter 26 (Ming China, Qing China, or Tokugawa Japan) with one of the Islamic Empires discussed in Chapter 27 (The Ottomons, Safavids, or Mughals). Explain the similarities and differences you see in how they came to power, how they promoted culture, and how they sought to build prosperity.
4. Revolutions. Explain the underlying forces leading to an era of political upheaval in America, France, Haiti, and Latin America. In what ways do you see these “revolutions” as similar? Explain how you also see each area handing political and social change differently.
5. Liberalism and Nationalism. Using examples from Chapter 28, show how each of these ideologies was important to events in the nineteenth century. How did these liberalism and nationalism influence the world we live in today?
6. Industrial Societies. Explain a few ways the growth of industry changed societies. Describe some of the major problems of the era, and some of the proposed solutions. Do you see us continuing to deal with the same issues in today’s world?
7. Based on the reading in Chapter 30, compare the histories of the United States, Mexico, and Canada during the 18th and 19th centuries. How and when did each of the three nations gain independence? How were the three nations different on issues such as slavery, land rights, and treatment of indigenous peoples? How were they similar? If you like, you may consider how the modern relationship between these three nations reflects past events.
