This project will explore the culture and heritage of Saudi Arabia and their role in contemporary society through sculpture created using the natural resources of Saudi Arabia. The most obvious material to use in this project will be that created by the Date Palm Tree, which is a revered symbol in Saudi Arabia
This idea has been chosen for a number of reasons. Firstly, it is hoped that the project will impress upon younger generations the importance of preserving the nation’s cultural heritage and will encourage young people not to let traditional crafts lapse into oblivion. Also, the project will explore the importance of the use of natural raw materials in contemporary art, the integration of Saudi heritage and traditional crafts with the art of contemporary sculpture and how such sculptures can strengthen cultural values and preserve existing heritage. This project has been chosen due to my life-long interest in Saudi culture and heritage and will aim to create contemporary work through using palm leaves which will take the form of sculpture installation.
The project will take the form of a thesis and accompanying examples of sculpture created using Date Palm leaves or other natural resource.
