Annotated Bibliography & Presentation:
For this assignment you will conduct research on a topic related to our course content and present on this topic in-class. In presenting, introduce yourself, your topic, and what led you to select this particular topic. There will be a sign-up sheet listing suggested topics (you may select your own topic per my approval). Once you have settled on a topic you are to conduct research. Start with the index of the texts I have assigned to the course to see if there is content on your topic. Next, check out the Grove Encyclopedia of Art Online and the Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History offered on The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s website. Research if there are any YouTube videos on your topic. If it is suitable, you may share a clip with the class (as long as it is under five minutes). At this point, you should be in a position to author a thesis statement. How does your topic relate to Asian art, architecture, or visual culture? Look at books on your topic using the Library’s database; eBooks are fine to use. And, also peer-reviewed, scholarly, journal articles from ProQuest. While on-campus you may search ProQuest at: http://search.proquest.com/advanced?accountid=37269 in order to help in answering your thesis statement.
For this assignment, you are required to list seven sources using the Chicago Manual Style and write one-to-two paragraphs summarizing the information you obtained from this source as it relates to your topic and thesis. The goal of this assignment is that you offer in-depth information on the topic, so that others in the class may benefit from your research. Please keep this in mind while you are conducting research. Therefore, only four sources may be from the Internet, a dictionary, or encyclopedia (if you have questions about these types of sources see a librarian, the art history tutor, or ask me). The other three resources must be chapters from books or peer-reviewed, scholarly, journal articles. Write a one-page introduction to your topic using Times New Roman, font size 12 and double-spacing. This should be the first page of your assignment and include the topic you researched and your name. Include an introduction to your topic, what led you to formulate your thesis statement, and your conclusion (the answer to your thesis). I would recommend that you allocate one paragraph for each section. Following this page should be the seven citations (listed in alphabetical order by the authors’ last name) with each annotation (summary).
You will be graded on the proper format of your citation and the quality of your summation, and the thoroughness of your research as it relates to your topic and thesis statement. Please write with clarity from an objective standpoint. Review for proper grammar, syntax, and punctuation. See the art history tutor, visit the Writing Center, or ask one of your classmates to review your assignment prior to submitting it to me for a grade. I would strongly recommend that you consult with the Barnet text and read the sections on research and formulating a thesis statement. Also, you may view examples of proper citations in the Barnet text.
