Assessment 1 – Case Scenario Report planning
This document will help you plan and prepare your Report using Inquiry Based Learning (IBL) Approach

Inquiry Based Learning stage

What you need to do to critically analyse and demonstrate your critical thinking about the Case Scenario

Learning Outcomes Section – Notes/planning for your Report
Demonstrate your learning in each section by presenting the information that you have examined to improve your knowledge and understanding of selected Case Scenario

STEP 1 – CONNECT

Select and Analyse one of the case scenarios
Think about what are some of the key issues or information that you consider are important in this case scenario

Notes for the Introduction section of your report

Introduce the context of your selected case scenario. Do not repeat the scenario synopsis but rather document what you consider are the key issues in this Case Scenario here.

STEP 2 – QUESTION

Think about some of the broader questions about this case scenario that you want to know more information about

Identify the additional information you need to know to understand the case better (remember this is about your learning)
It may help you to formulate your questions in a list format here.

Notes for Critical Questions and Rationale section of your report

Briefly identify and discuss why these questions are relevant to your learning about this case scenario (ie. how will these questions help you understand the case better?)

STEP 3 – INVESTIGATE

Review your current knowledge about this clinical presentation

Research the clinical presentation further. Record the resources you used to improve your knowledge of this clinical presentation below.
Think about the new information to develop new questions.
You could list any new Questions which you have about the clinical presentation after researching further here.

Notes for Review of current and new Knowledge section of your report

Briefly identify any new questions which you have based on your research and discuss why your new questions are relevant to your case study.

Provide a brief overview of a theoretical principle of Life Span and Development using one of the psychosocial developmental theories and explain why it is applicable to your chosen scenario. e.g. Levinson, Buhler or Erickson.

Briefly discuss if a cultural perspective needs to be taken into account if relevant to the scenario
Are there any identifiable health promoting behaviours or health detrimental beliefs and attitudes in the scenario? Discuss how these health detrimental beliefs and attitudes, life style choices and risk behaviours may impact on the health status of the client.

Examine the underlying pathophysiological processes relating to the clinical presentation. Is the pathophysiology underlying the clinical presentation affected by the identified health behaviours?

STEP 4 – CONSTRUCT

Using a holistic and person-centred approach, explore the issues raised in this case scenario and how you can support this client.

Consider the NMBA RN Competency Standards.

Consider the nursing interventions and clinical skills that are required for this Case report.

Consider the on-going patient safety concerns in relation to continuing care or discharge planning.
Notes for the Nursing Management Safety

Identify the appropriate ANMC RN Competency Standards that would be applicable for you as an RN in providing holistic and person-centred care for your client.

Construct new understandings of two nursing management strategies that could be utilised to provide optimal and holistic nursing care for the client. Provide evidence of how your nursing management connects to the identified pathophysiological processes.

Discuss identified on-going safety concerns that you would you take into account for continuing care and or discharge planning

STEP 5 – EXPRESS

Document in the body of your report evidence of your new understandings to a nursing context.
Notes

Draft the body of your report from your notes.
Ensure you use headings and subheadings throughout your report.
Ensure intext referencing is correctly used.

STEP 6 – REFLECT

Reflect on your learning about the chosen case study.
Reflect on your thoughts about how detrimental beliefs and attitudes, life style choices and risk behaviours might impact upon the client’s future health status.
Notes for the Conclusion section of your report

Conclude this report with your professional reflection and overview of the key points.

Case Scenario Report
Assignment instructions
Assessment #1 – Case Report
Students are required to submit a written report on the analysis of a case scenario. Two case scenarios will be available via the Learnonline Course Website and students must choose one (1) from the two. The main aim of case scenario report will be to apply selected theories from the course content to simulated problem solving and decision-making, reinforcing the applicability of theory to practical situations. Further detailed information including assessment description, marking criteria and academic writing requirements are located on the course learnonline webpage.

Assessment 1: Case Scenario Report
Case Scenario 1
Jeremy Kayton is an 18 year old male student who has presented to the Emergency Department at 2130 post ingestion of an unknown quantity of ‘Panadol Osteo’ tablets, with an unknown quantity of bourbon at approximately 1900. On arrival Jeremy was withdrawn, teary and not making eye contact, he stated to the Triage nurse that he had taken the tablets for a ‘headache that would not go away’.
# Past Medical History- Jeremy has recently been diagnosed as a Type 1 Diabetic. Regular medications: NovoRapid, Lantus. Jeremy has had difficulty adjusting to his diagnosis of diabetes and has on occasions missed his dose of insulin when out socialising. Nil other significant history noted.
Jeremy was born in Canada but moved to Australia when he was 17, to pursue his studies. He has no immediate family in Australia. A concerned friend who brought him to the hospital advised the Emergency Nurse that Jeremy has been very stressed lately due to a relationship breakdown. His grades at university have suffered and he has been working long hours to support himself.
The Emergency RMO who has come to review Jeremy has ordered a paracetamol level to be taken within 4-8 hours after the initial ingestion of the Panadol Osteo. He has been commenced on intravenous therapy Normal Saline over 4 hours (1000/4). The doctor will review the Paracetamol level and will determine if further treatment (e.g. N-acetylcysteine infusion) is required for the paracetamol ingestion according to the ‘Guidelines for the management of paracetamol overdose’ Nomogram. The emergency team have discussed the case with the psychiatric team who will come and review Jeremy shortly. BGL 12mmol.
