THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE

You have to watch the movie The Manchurian Candidate (1962). Make sure it is the original movie not the remake. Then you have to do the following 5 components in an essay format:

1) an introduction that provides an overview of your paper for the reader.

2) a brief description of the film’s plot (no more than 250 words).

3) brief biographical sketches of at least three of the principal persons involved in the making or production of the film. Depending on the film you select, these may include the film director, the screenwriter, several of the performers, the cinematographer, the music composer, or others. If appropriate, describe the significance of the film in the context of that person’s career. For a guide to biographical reference books, click on Biographical Sources on Film.

4) a description and critical evaluation of three reviews that were written at the time the film was first released. In selecting the three reviews, aim for some balance and variety in your sources (i.e., look for different types of publications with different points of view, if possible–for instance, it is better if not all three reviews come from daily newspapers). Do not simply summarize the content of each review; rather try to analyze and assess the author’s perspective. The instructor may be able to assist you in locating reviews, if necessary. Please be sure to provide complete bibliographic citations of your reviews, including electronic versions if applicable. For more information on finding reviews, click on Finding Reviews of 1960s Films.

5) your own assessment of the film in relation to its cultural and/or historical context. Based on what you know about the 1960s (and what you have read in the course textbooks), do you think the film is a representative artifact of its time and culture? Why or why not?
