Critically reflect on ONE example of Australian Indigenous art and design. This can be an object/artwork held in the collections of the SA Museum or the Art Gallery of South Australia, or it could be an example of public art in the city.
Briefly describe where you saw it, who created it and when, and anything else of significance you can find out about it. Then, reflect on your responses to it: Why did you choose it? What affect or impact did the work have on you? Remember to consider its context and the significance of where and how it is presented or exhibited. You may also incorporate a photograph or sketch of the object/artwork/public art piece in your assignment.
Depending on the example you choose, your reflection might raise questions of interpretation, communication, aesthetics or cultural sensibilities, or you could make reference to the politics and ethics of collections, exhibition design and the ways particular meanings are privileged and communicated. The brevity of this assignment won’t allow you to discuss every aspect, so try not to spread yourself too thin. Be succinct and focus in depth on the things you think are most important. Any further research you do that doesn’t fit into this assignment will be useful for inclusion in Assessment two (Journal), and/or in Assessment three (Project) – in which you will be required to respond to a piece of art and design in the medium of your choice.
Broadly, the aim of reflective writing is to get you to explore your responses to something; to try to explain, in this instance, what drew you to the chosen piece, how it affected you, and what meanings you take from it. Your reflection might track the process of engaging with and learning about the object/artwork: What were your first impressions? How did these change as you looked more closely and learned, or thought, more about it?
