-use action verbs
-use neutral words/phrases or nondirectional languages, eg. experiences of… instead of successful experiences of… ; don’t use words that suggest an outcome
-provide a general working definition of central phenomenon
-includes words/terms that denote the strategy of inquiry used in the various stages of research
-say who the study participants are
-identify the research site
-include (towards end of purpose statement) language that delimits the scope of participation or research sites
