ASSIGNMENT BRIEF
RES601 Research Methods 1: Research Paradigms and Advanced Qualitative Methods
RES601 Assignment Brief – PhD and EdD Students Term 1 AY2014-2015
Please note that all papers must be submitted through Turnitin by the deadline dates. You are encouraged to submit a draft paper to check for inadvertent plagiarism prior to submit the final paper through Turnitin. In addition, an electronic copy of your assignments should be emailed to your DoS and module tutor.
It is expected that course texts, as required readings for class, will also be used where relevant in assignments. This applies to the required books and articles covered in class discussion and that relevant articles reviewed will be used in the final paper.
Presentations: the presentations will not be used for summative assessment, but for formative experience in the module and to facilitate discussion and peer teaching. On a regular basis, students will be selecting from a number of research studies on each major method for discussion purposes in the class. These presentations are intended to be 5 minutes in length with some class discussion.
Please note use only qualitative research methodology (e.g focus group, interview) for writing this paper.
1. Paper proposal (15%) This assignment is an 800 words proposal with an attached minimum 2 pages of supporting bibliography.
The introductory 1-3 paragraph(s) should include the following:
• Purpose of the paper: its major theme, question and research problem?
• Scope: How many cases (countries, organizations, groups, individuals) will be examined?
• What aspects will be examined?
• Identification of approach: cultural, political, organizational, interpersonal, etc.?
• The importance or value of the topic?
The next sections of the research proposal should be devoted to a literature review of the theoretical debates, and then, provide some tentative propositions or hypotheses and conceptual framework. Then, move on to the selected approach and methodology.
• Which theories and/or models will be used? And why – what is the rationale?s
• It is best to identify the major theorist(s) from the primary discipline (anthropology, politics, sociology, psychology, etc.), even though you are mostly using educational or leadership articles that draw on this foundation to develop the paper
• Describe the research approach including the research philosophy and methodology
• If you are going to write an empirical paper, you will need to discuss the research methods involved, such as qualitative/quantitative, type of instrument, type and numbers of subjects/cases (schools, universities, colleges, etc.). Empirical can also refer to the use of primary documents, such as policy papers, press releases, other organizational documents. If the paper is more theoretical and analytical, you will likely be drawing on empirical research studies that have already been done.
Subsequent paragraphs: 1 each for every major issue anticipated such as issues of research design, research access, resources (e.g. cost, time), pilot study, anticipated findings and potential significance of the study.
In summary, key considerations for assessing the paper proposal include:
Introduction /20
Literature review and conceptual framework/ideas/25
Approach, Methodology and Methods /30
Other Proposal Paragraphs /25
