Create your own research question. In the 2008 GSS, locate two variables. One will serve as your independent variable and the other will serve as your dependent variable. Conduct a t-test in SPSS. Do values on the dependent variable significantly differ as a result of different categories of the independent variable? How do the results inform your research question?
a. What do the distributions of both variables look like? What do the appropriate measures of central tendency tell us about how the data are distributed within these variables? What do the frequencies and/or cumulative frequencies tell us about the distribution of the dependent variable in the sample?
b. Create a graph that illustrates the relationship between the two variables.
c. Based on the sample data, are there significant differences in the dependent variable in accord with categories of the independent variable? What data/statistic helps you make your decision? What can you say about the relationship between the variables?
