The aim of the module is to understand the role of the state in development processes in the developing world, with particular reference to Africa and
Asia. The focus on these regions will encourage students to critically engage mainstream thought on development experiences as they examine developmental lessons from the
global South alongside those from the global North. The module reflects on the role of the
state apparatus as a preserve of political and economic leadership and considers the actions
that it may take to drive transformation that should benefit the broader society. The course
is conceived against the background of the conceptualisation of the role of the state in
development and the debates that have ensued on this in relation to the developing world.
