Objective: The objective of the Essay is to provide you with the opportunity to explore in
greater detail aspects of one of the theoretical perspectives discussed during the module.
Brief: Select a specific cultural artefact, activity or event. Choose one of the weekly
theoretical perspectives that we discussed during the module (Weeks 2-10). Select a
number of key concepts or ideas from that theoretical perspective. Provide a detailed
analysis of your chosen cultural artefact, activity or event in terms of your key concepts.
Examples: For instance, you might choose the videogame Monument Valley and analyse it
in terms of the key concepts of problematic, symptomatic reading, manifest text and latent
text from Week 3 of the module (Marxism 2). Or, you might choose a packet of Cheezly
vegan cheese and analyse it in terms of the key concepts of myth and binary opposition from
Week 5 of the module (Structuralism). Or, you might choose a beach volleyball match and
analyse it in terms of the key concepts of patriarchy and sexism from Week 6 of the module
(Gender and Sexuality 1).
