The rules and laws regarding undocumented students are constantly changing. Add to that the sensitivity of this issue and you have a population that is among the most challenging for college counselors. Given that and what you learned in the lecture, take this case and apply your best counseling skills.

Katarina is an academically gifted student who will likely be the Class of 2015 Valedictorian. She comes to you like any other student to talk about colleges and together you create a possible choice of colleges to which she will apply. You provide her with information about financial aid, the FAFSA, scholarships, and merit aid. Her mother is a single parent on an hourly wage and you expect Katarina to be eligible for merit and need based financial aid. She is accepted to her top choice, but soon afterwards she comes to you crying because her mother told her she will not be going to college until she earns the money to pay for it. Katarina learned that she moved to her current address when Katarina was three years old and neither she nor her mother are U.S. permanent residents.
