Students will need to select a group such as a sporting team, community group, work team, housemates etc. and analyse the nature and operation of the group based on principles and approaches covered in the course and the readings. You will need to prepare a 3000 word assignment based on the outline below. You will find the assignment easier if your group is one with which you have a reasonably long-term and close connection. However, your group does not have to be like this. It could be quite flexible such as an art group or volunteers on a project etc. It needs to have enough elements to make your assessment of the group meaningful and comprehensive.
You will need to document a full analysis of the structure of, development of and interaction within your chosen group, and present your material in ways which most effectively deliver the information about your group. You will need to choose a group to analyse and also apply or reflect on a group technique. To prepare the report you need to do the following:
A. Select your group and analyse your group – A group can be informal or formal. Collect all the relevant information (reports, observations, interviews and/or survey instruments)
B. Apply or reflect on a group technique – Choose and conduct a group technique with the group. This could be conducting a focus group, facilitating a planning meeting, observing group interactions, surveying group members etc. Analyse how the process went and describe how it went and what came from the technique.
C. Use the following format to prepare your report:
1. Introduction
Make the readers want to hear more about your selected group
Tell the readers how your report is going to be organised
Set the stage for the conclusion.
2. Analytical discussion (body of the report)
Describe the selected group – general information (historical perspective of the group, functions, objectives, etc.)
Describe the structure of the group
Describe the stages of development of this group
Discuss the task behaviour and maintenance behaviour within the group
Analyse the roles played by executive members of the group (analyse team role behaviour)
Discuss the leadership structure and roles
Analyse conflict of interests in this group and its management strategies
Analyse the dysfunctional behaviour and its effect on group goal achievement
Effectiveness of this group.
3. Group Technique
What approach was chosen or negotiated with the group and why?
What group technique was chosen and why?
Discuss how the process went.
4. Conclusions and recommendations
Summarise your arguments and conclude what this group demonstrates about group processes, leadership and conflict management.
What could be done (by you or other members) to improve the functioning of this group?
5. Learnings
Personal learning: What have you learnt from conducting this analysis?
6. References – At least 8 references required
Reference MUST be made to your course materials and to readings. Read the referencing systems carefully and cite the reference(s) in the appropriate place and manner in your report. You have to demonstrate your professionalism in analysing and preparing this report.
