Discussion 1
Many children enjoy telling narratives about their own experiences. While this is helpful for literacy development, Korat (2001) notes that it can be even more beneficial to have children expand their story-telling to things they have not personally experienced.
Design an assignment that would encourage elementary school students to create a non-personal narrative about a child with different characteristics. You can choose to have students create a fictional character or learn more about a certain individual or group of people. Include the topic you would assign and where you would direct students to gather information about the topic. How would you encourage collaborative thinking (discussed as the “externalization principle” by Korat) and why would this be useful?
Discussion 2
Describe the diversity program or service you located in the Web Resource Activity. What specific issues are focused on? In what ways can this program or service help you in your work with diverse children and their families? Would you recommend this as a valuable resource to your classmates? Why or why not?
