Codes of Ethics provide valuable guidelines for human services professionals, but they do not replace the need for personalized judgment and reasoning in working with clients. Every human services professional must strive to remain creative, active, and deliberate while maintaining an unquestionable ethical orientation in addressing client needs and concerns. It is imperative that you maintain your dedication to ethical principles and practices while building an empathetic and genuine relationship with your clients. Consider this and discuss the following:
1. When your personal beliefs conflict with the beliefs and needs of your client, how might you maintain your role ethically in spite of your personal beliefs?
2. Discuss the role of ethical decision making, professional organizations’ Codes of Ethics, and self- assessment within the client–practitioner relationship.
3. Complete the self-assessment inventory at the end of Chapter 1. What items did you have the hardest time answering or the strongest reaction to? How could this impact your ethical work with clients?
