In his 2009 article in Die Unterrichtspraxis, "Machine Translation in the German Classroom: Detection, Reaction, Prevention," Soren Steding says that use of online language tranlation sites should be strictly forbidden in German language learning. He notes that while some authors feel that Machine Translation (MT) has a place in the classroom, "many language instructors probably will encounter it as an uninvited guest" (p. 178). This is because students usually use it without questioning the accuracy of the translation; to them, if the Internet site supplies it, it must be Okay. Also, giving a machine-translated text can be considered plagiarism"… because it is passing off the ideas or words of another (here: the software) as one’s own" (p. 178). He says,"The first step in Machine Translation-prevention in the German classroom is to make it absolutely clear to students that the use of machine translation is not allowed.
