1. A topic that lends itself to literary analysis. A biographical analysis of the author will not be permitted. (Limit relevant biographical information to your introduction or conclusion.)
2. A title that establishes the focus of the paper.
3. An interesting introduction that prepares the reader for the thesis.
4. A clear, concisely worded thesis that offers an assertion about an idea (theme) in
the literary work. The thesis should be the last sentence of the introductory
paragraph.
5. Properly organized body paragraphs with topic sentences that relate to the thesis.
6. Ample and relevant supporting material from the primary and secondary sources.
7. The use of at least six sources: the primary source and five secondary sources
from scholarly journals or books of criticism. Use the library’s databases to
locate secondary sources. Summaries of articles in reference books are not
allowed. Internet sources are not allowed.
8. Standard diction. Don’t use informal, conversational language, and don’t use
flowery, puffed-up language for the sake of sounding academic.
9. Correct grammar.
10. Varied sentences; effective use of transitions.
11. Absence of the 1st person pronouns “I” and “we” and the 2nd person pronoun
“you.”
12.Correct use of MLA documentation (in-text citations and works cited page) and
correct format of paper. For in-text citations, authors’ names should be directly
cited within sentences before the paraphrase or quotation is given (citing only the
page number in parentheses). For html copies of journal articles that lack the
original page numbers, cite a paragraph number instead: (par. 8).
