why do poor people have poor nutrition?

Choose one topic that interests you from the following five topics:
? Measuring development
? Using randomized trials in development
? Health
? Education
? Microfinance

1. Write an essay on your chosen topic. The essay should identify a problem and a possible underlying cause. (Examples of problems: why do poor people have poor nutrition? Why are education services underutilized? Why do credit institutions not serve the poor, or charge such high interest rates when they do?). You can be more specific focusing on a particular developing country or region.
2. The structure of your essay should include:
1. Introduction
Describe broadly the problem, the setting, the main theories on your chosen problem, highlight your proposal

2. Literature Review

Short review the theoretical and empirical literature

3. Potential solution
In light of the literature review, discuss some potential solutions to the problem you chosen. More on this in points 3, 4 and 5 below.
Feel free to be creative. If you think that solutions so far proposed/tested in the literature do not work, then propose your own policy and describe why you think could be implemented, tested and why it might yield better results than current policies.

4. Conclusion

Tell us what we have learned from the problem you have researched on.
3. Discuss at least three possible programmes or policies that could mitigate the problem you have chosen by affecting the channel you identified.
4. Choose the program you have thought of that sounds most promising to you, and describe it in some detail. Explain clearly why you think it meets a potential need and how it could lead to improvement in the lives of the poor. Describe, how would you implement it? Who would be the target population? How would you encourage take-up of the program? What do you expect the effect to be?
5. Describe how you would evaluate the program. Would you use a randomized evaluation or some other technique? Who would comprise the treatment and control groups? At what level would you randomize or assign treatment? What data would you collect? What are the relevant outcome variables?
6. For your references include at least three papers on your chosen topic. These three papers must be different to the ones included in the syllabus’ compulsory reading list (those marked with an *).
7. The essay should be roughly of 1,500 words (excluding references, footnotes and appendices).
