The student will be prepared to discuss a specific proposed criminal statute, preferably one recently the subject of media attention. Examples of such media attention might involve the proposed law regarding cell phone use in cars, proposed laws prohibiting gay marriage, legalizing marijuana, etc.
Our Texas legislature is in session for Spring 2013. Each student should “adopt” a criminal law bill, either in support or opposition, and follow the bill through the semester. You are to be the resident expert regarding the bill, its origins, its status, and its intended effect. You will write a one page typewritten double-spaced on this bill, or one that you believe should have been filed.
Any statute or bill discussed should certainly be criminal in nature, and the student should be able to attribute to the sponsor of the bill or the bill number. The assignment does not require that the student limit discussion to Texas laws, so feel free to discuss the laws of other jurisdictions.
