Crito Essay

This is a three (3) page essay. Answer all elements of each Part of the exam.
PART I One page [minimum/maximum length] 15 points
(a) [five points] Briefly give your definition of a “friend”; or “friendship”;.
(b) [five points] In one sentence answer yes or no to the following question: In your view, and
based on your definition, was Crito a good friend to Socrates? Answers over one sentence will
receive a 5 point deduction.
(c) [five points] If Crito was a good friend, why? If not, why not? You must provide textual
evidence from the Crito that supports your answer to (c). There will be a five point deduction for
a failure to give citations from the Crito. Remember: DO NOT QUOTE! Every quotation will
receive a ten point deduction. Paraphrase in your own words and give the Stephanus page
number.
PART II Two pages [minimum/maximum length]
Start Part II on page two. There will be a ten point penalty for page length violation.
Imagine King visiting Socrates on death row. Drawing upon textual evidence from the Crito,
King’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail”;, and “Love, Law, and Civil Disobedience”; answer
the following questions.
(d) [thirty points] discuss whether you think King would try to convince Socrates to escape from
prison. In your discussion, be sure to address these issues:
(e) what King’s response would be to the argument of the Laws of Athens,
(f) whether King agrees with Socrates’ stance on retaliation and why,
(g) whether King would regard Socrates’ escape as an act of civil disobedience and
why.
Note: There will be a five point deduction each for a failure to give citations from these three
texts. Remember: DO NOT QUOTE! Every quotation will receive a ten (10) point deduction.
Paraphrase in your own words and give the Stephanus page number or page numbers from King.
Make the King page references as follows, for example: (Letter 62) or (Love 43). Do not give
the entire title of either work
