The Individual Virtual Organization (iVO) assignment is a two part assignment that requires each student to create a hypothetical organization that he or she believes would represent the ideal organizational structure for a particular industry and contrast it with the same concepts in a second industry. For example, a student might use a fast food restaurant that caters to vegetarians and others with special dietary concerns as their hypothetical organization. To contextualize and contrast the “ideals” for fast food, a different industry must be chosen (e.g., manufacturing, retail, technology, etc.). In this way, students will be able to explore their ideas about the perfect organization in a particular industry and evaluate the transportability of those ideas to other industries. The point is to demonstrate how concepts change and remain the same when they are applied to different contexts.
The iVO is required of all students regardless of whether they chose to complete the gVO or exam option. Using the weekly gVO questions and scenarios as a guide, students should provide a description of their organization using concepts from each chapter and contrasting those same concepts/positions in a different industry. For example, a highly autonomous and independent decision making structure might be ideal in a small software development company, but how would it work for a huge manufacturing company or a chain of restaurants?
In total, students will need to use at least one concept from each of the 13 chapters in developing their hypothetical organization. Students must then take the same concepts and position and apply them to a different industry. Finally, students must provide a brief assessment of how well the concepts and positions transferred from each industry
