Case Sexuality, Reproduction and Development

Imagine that you are a counselor at an urban health clinic. Sitting across from you is a 16-year-old high-school sophomore who is reporting that she believes she may have contracted gonorrhea from her boyfriend, the first male with whom she has ever had sex. She has come to the clinic to be tested.

When she brought up her fear with her boyfriend she states that her boyfriend claimed that she must have been lying about being a virgin, and that she must have given it to him.

You ask if anyone else in her family knows. She says that her parents are very strict and religious and she fears being beaten or thrown out even if she discloses that she is sexually active.

1) Assume that the outcome is that she has gonorrhea. Name three things you can do to help and support this young woman.

2) Assume that two days later she finds out that she does not have the disease. She reports that when she told her “ex-boyfriend” he said he was sorry and asked if they could date again. She isn’t sure what to do. Name three things you would say or do.

Submit Case 2 when it is completed.
