Week 4: Ad Gone Bad Mini-Paper (25 points) In order to construct a strong argument, it is often helpful to breakdown an argument – particularly one that didn’t work well. After selecting an ad that didn’t work from those provided below, you will explain how the persuasion didn’t work in the ad and where you think the argument broke down. Ultimately, how did the ad misfire? Use concepts from the text and our class to support your paper. ** Pick an ad from one of the options on pages 2 and 3 ** Consider these questions as you write your paper: What is the ad for? What company, business, or product is the ad for? Why didn’t the persuasive attempt work? What about it was “faulty”? Who do you think the ad was directed toward? Who wasn’t it directed toward? Could it have offended anyone in particular? Why or why not? And who? Does the ad attempt to use ethos, pathos, or logos? How and why? Does it succeed? Why or why not? This is a very important part of the assignment, so make sure to hit this one! How does the argument of the ad break down? What elements from our textbook can you connect to the analysis of this ad and its effects? What do you think would be a way to do this advertisement more effectively?
