As stated in the course syllabus, you are required to write a research essay

Between 6 – 8 double-spaced typewritten numbered pages in length, on a topic of your choice. I ask that this topic encompass at least two but no more than three of the semester’s readings (at least one which must be drawn from the texts assigned before and at least one drawn from after the midterm examination), and that you use at least two, and no more than three, outside critical and/or historical sources as reverberant voices (not as substitutes) for your discussion. You will use the standard scholarly apparatus: MLA-style quotes and Works Cited page, indented long quotes, etc. Use Internet sources wisely! Websites with the suffix .edu are your best bet if you choose to look online. Also consider using journal articles through JSTOR and/or Project Muse, both accessible at the Queens College Library. For off-site access to the Queens College Library, consult the Queens College Office of Converging Technologies (OCT) web page or ask the OCT Help Desk.
Please note: your grade on this essay will depend not only on how you present your arguments but also how well you follow these directions.
A first draft of this essay is welcome, but not required, sent to me via email. I will read these drafts and return them to you with perhaps a few comments (and without grades), or just an OK to proceed. Based on my suggestions (if you find them useful) and your own revisions, you will prepare a second and final version of the essay to be sent to me via email only, by 11:59 PM on 16 May. You may, however, submit your final essay as soon as you deem it complete.
IMPORTANT: If you insist on turning in your essay late, it will receive a penalty. Keep in mind that this research essay and your final examination are worth 40% of your grade.
If you have difficulty coming up with a topic of your own, a good place to start is to go back over your notes and look carefully for some common elements in the works we have studied. There are literally scores of topics to write about that can be taken from the literature we have read this semester.
