This assignment is intended to provide opportunities to practice communication skills, develop resources, and to examine materials related to the course. It also includes field-based experiences to be conducted at settings serving culturally and linguistically diverse children and families. You will need to do the following:
Field Experiences 1:
• Interview three early childhood teachers and find out about their experiences in parent involvement efforts. Ask about what they see as challenges and rewards. Summarize their responses.
• Visit a school or program and interview the school principal and two early childhood teachers. Ask about strategies used to effectively design parent meetings. Inquire about activities that effectively engage parents and families of diverse backgrounds (ESOL). Review their comments and prepare a list of
characteristics of purposeful meetings

• Investigate the family configurations in your classroom or community. Interview your colleagues and a sample of families and find out about the family configurations. Summarize your findings and list the different forms or configurations.
• Compare your findings with the information about family arrangements from the Bureau of the Census. In a one or two page document describe your findings and their implications for early childhood practice.

• Interview at least three parents. Include at least one family with linguistic differences (ESOL). Find out about what are the situations they consider most challenging for their families. Classify their comments into: social issues, language, economic issues, and health issues.
Field Experiences 4
• Meet and interview the parent coordinator or ESOL coordinator. Ask about policies and materials used for effective communication with ELL and culturally diverse families. Inquire about policies regarding the use of translators whenever it may be needed.
o Based on their responses, prepare a list of do’s and don’ts about when establishing communication and relationships.
• Interview a family coordinator from an early education program and find out about purpose, process and policies for conducting home visitation. Summarize your findings.

• Conduct interviews with a local program or agency and identify policies and available services to meet the needs of families and children who are facing challenges.
o Specifically, find out about programs and services for families coping with stressors such as illness, economic challenges, divorce, death in the family, and others. Summarize and reflect on the implications of the findings on your knowledge about collaboration with families.

• Visit a local early childhood program (public schools, early Head Start, community-based) and interview the family coordinator. Find out about the requirements and process for the preparation of the IFSP. Inquire about services for young ESOL children with special needs.
• Review the META Consent Decree (or the document that establishes services to ELL children and their families in your state) and identify the items that define services for young ELL. Write a report about how the services comply with the META Decree.
b. Demographical information:
i. Complete the demographical information for your field experiences. Follow the details in the form that appears in the appendix section of this syllabus and submit the corresponding information.
c. Reflective summary:
i. Include a two-page written summary and commentary highlighting your experiences as you completed the activities. Include in the summary comments about how the field experiences contributed to gain knowledge about parent involvement strategies and collaboration with families with cultural and linguistic differences (ESOL).
