2 Topics to choose 1.

Topic 1

Based on your experience at work or in school describe the ways in which the principles of scientific management and bureaucracy are still used in organisations. Do you believe these characteristics will ever cease to be part of organisational life? Discuss.

Note: Essential elements of the two approaches to management theory should be identified and considered. Whether such fundamental concepts could or should be integrated into 21st Century organisational behaviour is the area that will need balanced argument. Reference to later theorists discussed during the course will help illustrate the answer.

Whilst personal experience may assist care should be taken not to simply present an anecdotal description of an organisation, all observations should be set against an element of management theory and referenced according to Harvard convention.

Mere description of the two approaches will NOT be sufficient. There must be evidence that management theory, and its consequences are understood.

Reference to topics such as power, control and change would enhance your submission and demonstrate a broader understanding. Again, this needs to be set in the context of academic sources.

Topic 2

Compare and contrast “traits” and “styles” approaches to Leadership and critically assess the relevance of these approaches in the 21st Century using industry examples.

Note: Essential elements of the two approaches should be identified and considered.

Mere reiteration of the two approaches will NOT be sufficient. There must be evidence of analysis, discussing the differences and similarities as well as evaluating the relevance of the two theories.

This title indicates that you need to include industry examples. These should be correctly referenced, according to Harvard convention, and not personal anecdotes.
