Eva Mackey’s article on indigenous land claims in the US and Canada argues forcefully that land claims are shaped by local and national contexts. Following Mackey’s insight, examine the relation between historical/local context and specific movements described in Ethnicity, Inc. and The Struggle for the World. While these authors see the commodization of ethnicity (Comaroffs) and the rise of “aurora movements” (L&Z) as products of global forces, Mackey’s arguments point to the importance of specific local contexts in shaping social-political action. Considering specific examples from each of these works, discuss how local history and context shape the movements/organizations in question. How far can one generalize about global processes, when local contexts seem to shape the form and content of politics? How much weight should we give to the global vs. the local in understanding these movements?

All papers should be six to eight typed pages. Each page should be double-spaced, in a 12-point font, with one inch margins. Do not attempt to lengthen your papers by increasing font size or margin widths–this will result in a lower grade. No covers or title pages are necessary. For texts covered in the course you may use (author date: page) references (e.g. Abu-Lughod 1990: 123). All direct quotations must be enclosed in quotation marks or block quotes. If you use any sources
outside the class readings, provide a complete reference at the end of your paper, using AAA style(see http://faculty.ucr.edu/~derickf/07fallmethods/aaa_style_handout.pdf for examples).
Your papers should be well thought-out and developed, organized and expressed clearly, and show evidence of comprehension and critical reflection.

Houston, TX

3 seperate parts required part 3 is is ONLY part for Houston, TX

part 1 Racial Divides and Linguistic Boundaries

This unit focused on the effects of ethnicity in American cities. Based on what you have learned so far, do you believe urban immigrant cultures reflect racial divides and very real linguistic boundaries?

In your answer, reach a decision as to whether a fully integrated society speaking one language is still possible or even desirable.

Part 2 Diversity and the Melting Pot

For this discussion, the board of directors of ACDBN focus on cultural conflicts in urban areas. Read the “Urban Mosaics: Diversity and the Melting Pot” presentation and then answer the following questions. Is the board justified in shying away from a concrete policy to address urban cultural conflicts? Explain.

Urban Mosaics: Diversity and the Melting Pot

Gwendolyn Sanderson Smythe – Anglican Bishop

Diversity is a great word. Sadly, it can mean that we all live together in the same city while at the same time we live in completely different worlds.
Enrique Guzman – Union Executive

Cities are changing. And we see that Hispanic populations are building their cities within cities. In a lot of situations, it works for them.

Rahim Jahangiri – Successful Businessman

Okay. But the suburbs work for people too. Maybe they work even better? Communities develop. People live together and they grow together.

Yasmin Ardebili – Iranian Exile Novelist

Some cities work better than others. Certain older groups up and leave when other groups start to take over. Everything changes and on occasion it happens too fast.

Luther Jimarcus Jackson – African-American professor

Americans—all ethnic groups-ought to live together. Cities should be a place where this happens. Instead, what I see all too often are people simply cohabiting and coexisting with their brothers and sisters—only to ignore them on a deeper level.

Part 3

Now that you have identified the major ethnic groups within a particular area and analyzed their religious and ethnic situation, the next step in your course project is to investigate the competing cultures within your major urban area. To prepare for this assignment, use the suggested resource located below, and other information you find in the Internet to answer the following:

What is the African American population of the area?

Have Hispanic immigrants surpassed African Americans in numbers since 2000?

Do the numbers of foreign born in the area exceed the number of African Americans in the area? Do the numbers of these two groups exceed the number of other native born Americans (with no African American or Hispanic American backgrounds) in this area?

Has unemployment in the area decreased since 2000? Has family income in the area decreased since 2000?

Has unemployment in the area increased for any specific group since 2000? Has family income in the area increased for any specific groups since 2000?

Is there a coalition of some kind comprised of all major ethnic and racial groups in the area? Have there been cultural clashes as with the recent World Trade Center mosque proposal in New York City?

Human Resources Management (Recruitment and Staff Selection)

George is a twelve year experienced registered nurse working the evening shift in the post-operative ward at Harmony Hill Memorial Hospital. George wants to complete his Bachelor’s degree in nursing and the needed courses are only offered in the evenings. George ‘s supervisor informs the staff of an upcoming opening in the morning shift and advises them of the application deadline. Based on some of the rumors that have circulated regarding past practices of his supervisor, George knows that his supervisor has already filled the position with one of her closest friends and that George’s completing an application and interviewing for the position is nothing more than an exercise in futility. George brings his concerns to you, the HR supervisor. He claims that his gender and sexual orientation has affected his nursing supervisor’s decision and that any complaint from him to the nursing supervisor will result in retaliation or termination.

In 4 to 5 pages respond to the following:

1. What would you say to George about the ideal legal and ethical hiring practices?

2. What can you do to ensure that the recruitment and selection process is fair and consistent with the requirements of federal and state laws on hiring practices?

3. How would you address this with George’s nursing supervisor?

4. What steps can be taken in addressing George’s concerns for retaliation or termination?

5. Where does the human resource department fit into this scenario?
