Wedlock Marriage Plot: The New Normal

This is a term paper for a senior seminar class. I will provide some of my notes and research that I have done so far. I will also upload the sources I had plan on using. Below is the thesis that should only need proofreading:

The plots in Charlotte Bronte?s novel, Jane Eyre, and Jeffery Eugenides? novel, The Marriage Plot display the typical outline of a marriage plot; however, they do not follow the idea of a simple marriage plot exactly. In Jane Eyre, our narrator, Jane, starts off as an unwanted orphan with nothing to her name and is brushed off to a charity school, it ends with her finding her wealthy family and marrying the man of her dreams. In The Marriage Plot, two of the three main characters, Madeline and Mitchell, start off knowing exactly what is they want or are looking for, only to wind up, in the end, discovering that they originally wanted was not ideal. While both of these novels diverge from the marriage plot and seem to take root more so in a coming of age plot, that is not what is happening. What the novels are doing, are pulling away from a simple marriage plot: two suitors vying for the female?s hand in marriage, which has the ?narrative that ends, or almost ends, in a [happy] marriage or marriages, and is largely concerned throughout with courtship? (O?Connell 384). As such, what these novels are doing are following the plot of a different kind of a marriage plot, one known as wedlock, which is a marriage plot that ?serves as an index to the social, ethical, and historical orientation of the novelist? (Hinz 902). The wedlock marriage plot also allows for the word itself to be split into wed and lock to further describes what type of wedlock marriage plot a novel takes. If emphasis is placed on wed, it describes an optimistic or comic wedlock marriage plot and if the emphasis is on lock, it describes a tragic wedlock marriage plot. By showing how Jane Eyre and The Marriage Plot diverge from the traditional realms of a marriage plot, I will show how they each compare and/or contrast with the elements of a wedlock marriage plot.

The Uncanny: In Sigmund Freud’s essay, “the Uncanny” (“Das Unheimlich”), we finally have a psychological explanation of why certain things are scary to us.

In Sigmund Freud’s essay, “the Uncanny” (“Das Unheimlich”), we finally have a psychological explanation of why certain things are scary to us. Whether or not we agree with Freud, his account of the uncanny attempts to explain a specific kind of fright that we have come to label as "uncanny" or, in German, "un-homely"("unheimlich"). While some before hime have defined that uncanny as that which resides on the border between two things (e.g. living vs. Inanimate)- much like Julia Kristeva’s concept of "the abject" – Freud argues that things are uncanny if they seem to prove valid either a childhood complex(e.g. that the spirits of he dead are capable of contacting us and punishing us for misdeeds, or that toys are really alive).

After reading "The Uncanny" (pg 181-195)from the attach file
Pick one of the monster from the attach file : "Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (pg 81-96), "Dracula" (pg 115-124), "Serial Killers" (pg 205-210), "Movie Psychos and Slashers" (pg 211-218) and discuss how it supports Freud’s explanation of the uncanny. How would Freud explain your monster as an example of he uncanny .

Produce a thesis- based, thoughtful, well-constructed essay to support your argument. You must also used at least one outside written text from my attach file. Do not simply rely on one quote to give surface acknowledgement but actually discuss the text. Avoid personal experience, focus instead on the ideas of the text, but make sure that you tell us more than retell the text’s ideas. In other words, it is important that a paraphrase of an author’s ideas does not stand in for your own thoughts.

You must incorporate at least one (preferably more) quotation from the material, using proper MLA in-text citation, as well as Works Cited page at the end of the paper.

This project will focus on proving a claim that you want to make about your subculture.

The choice of this main point is entirely up to you. Yes, it could be an idea that you have already worked with in an earlier project, but the catch is that you will prove this idea differently. So the idea might be the same, but the writing and approach will become different.

For this assignment, you will develop an essay that is suitable for publication with a venue for Academic Writing. Your writing should focus on an opinion you hold about your subculture (a claim), and it should incorporate supporting research that relates to that idea and helps you to prove it.

Find bits from your research that supports the point you want to make, and weave those bits of support into your essay to bolster your argument. Don’t over-rely upon your research, but use it strategically to add credibility to your own argument.

This assignment should be somewhere between 5 – 7 pages to fully allow you to develop your idea about this subculture.
