Literature analysis: Our semester leads up to these works from the “American Renaissance,” so this essay can also be seen as a take-home final essay (due as it is at the end of the class)

Essay 3:
Our semester leads up to these works from the “American Renaissance,” so this essay can also be seen as a take-home final essay (due as it is at the end of the class). As with the previous essays, you should demonstrate your ability to analyze a work carefully, put it in its own context and contrast that with an earlier one. Your analysis should demonstrate close reading of the primary source, an ability to analyze the works as art, but you need not use secondary sources (you may if you wish). All papers should be submitted through Turnitin.
Requirements: MLA formatting, 1350-1750 words; 3 primary sources. These should respond to one of the prompts below.
Examine the passage in which Captain Vere argues that Billy Budd must hang. Discuss the argument that Melville is implicitly making in this speech, analyze how Vere arrived at that decision and posit how an earlier figure studied in this course would have felt about Vere’s argument.
Or
Analyze how Emerson’s call for “the Poet” (in his essay “The Poet” and in his letter to Whitman) is either fulfilled or not by Whitman’s actual poetry.
Or
Dickinson emphasizes the organizing power of the eye to make “sense” of the external world. Beginning with a careful explication of a couple of her poems, discuss this concept and its importance to two other works we studied this spring.
Or
Discuss why Dimmesdale’s public apology acts as expiation; how and why does it resolve the tensions within the novel and how and why does it differ from Emerson’s argument that he does not intend to “expiate”?
Or
These authors have quite strong visions of the appropriate relation between man and society as well as questions about man’s relation to his God. Illuminate two of the writers by comparing and contrasting their views, supporting your arguments with their words and the structure of their works.

Choose one of the plays from the reading list in your syllabus (i.e., Ives’s Sure Thing, Sophocles’s Antigone, Wilson’s Fences, Hwang’s M. Butterfly, or Valdez’s Los Vendidos). Once you have chosen a play, compose an essay about that piece, focusing your argument on one of the following aspects of the dramatic genre:

• Dramatic Structure
• Imagery and Symbolism
• Character
• Setting and Atmosphere
• Culture
• Theme

Your essay must include both a thesis which argues your particular claim about the play as well as well-chosen and detailed supporting evidence (i.e., incorporated quotations from the text) to help reinforce your thesis.

Also, to help build the content of your essay, as well as familiarize yourself with researched writing, you will also be required to use at least 3 secondary sources in your paper. While you may use online sources in your paper for additional research, your 3 required secondary sources must be academic sources (e.g., peer-reviewed journals, biographies of the author, scholarly book-length studies, etc.).

Preparation: Review chapters 16-19 for specific discussions of the different aspects of reading and writing about drama, and read chapter 5 for information on researched writing.

Assessment: Your grade will derive from your ability to argue a clear claim/thesis, to support that thesis with specific details and quotations taken from the text, to incorporate secondary sources into your writing, and to organize your thoughts in a way that helps your reader clearly understand your argument. Excellent papers will contain originality and demonstrate critical thought.

Requirements: You should submit an essay 4 full pages in length, typed and double-spaced. All paper options must use Times New Roman font in 12-pt size. Format your paper according to MLA guidelines.
