Primary sources are first-hand accounts from a time period in history that is being studied

Examples include letters, diaries, newspapers, treaties, and speeches to name a few. They have not been interpreted (although in some cases have been translated…) but are raw information from the time period which can be positive but also negative. They can be positive because they take you closer to the actual historical event and you can see what people who were really there were thinking. They also have drawbacks though, because people involved in the events undoubtedly have biases usually stronger than a historian writing hundreds of years later. Further, someone involved in an actual event is probably only seeing the event from one small perspective and may have no idea of the overall circumstances. One of the historian’s jobs is to sort through these obstacles in search of the truth – or at least what they interpret to be the truth.

Take a look at some primary documents through the “Primary Documents” tool on the course homepage. When you click on the tool it will take you to the “History Resource Center,” click on a historical category to the left and then click on “Primary Documents.” Choose one primary document that was written during the time period we are studying (1500 C.E. or later). If you are not sure whether the document you want to analyze is appropriate just email Mr. Froning. Read the document carefully and respond to the following:

1. Summarize your source.
2. What is the purpose of the source you chose? In other words, why was it created?
3. How may your source be important to historians today in reconstructing what happened?
4. What insight can we gain about the people of the time from this source including their attitudes?
5. List two ways your source can be interpreted.
6. What biases, flaws in perspective, or inaccuracies, if any, should historians take into account when they use this source?

Submit your assignment in class as a MS WORD file. Times New Roman, 12 pitch, double spaced. Assignments should be approximately 550 words in length. Be sure to list the title of your primary document at the top of your paper (as well as your name, and date). Email a copy to Mr. Froning as a backup.

The purpose of this assignment is to realistically assess how you will progress through your benchmarks, courses, selection of dissertation chair and committee.

Candidacy examination, proposal defense, research, and completion of dissertation (manuscript option or standard bound dissertation). Some of the dates on your timeline are definite (e.g., completion of a benchmark) and some will be estimates. Be thoughtful and realistic, but encourage yourself to develop a plan that moves in a timely manner. For example, IRB approval may take 2-4 months. Think of scholarly activities you can accomplish during while IRB is evaluating your submission. As with any timeline, you will make adjustments as you progress, but having a realistic plan will help you see to the end and make decisions that fit into the timeline. Include any decisions or activities that you want to pin to the timeline, such as choosing a chair, applying for scholarship, taking time off from work during data collection, so you will have a good idea of when you need to be doing activities. Be sure to put an expected graduation date at the end of your timeline! This timeline will be helpful in planning your objectives for NURS 631 with your mentor(s).

Specifics about this portion of the assignment: This should fit on one page, but you may go longer if you need to connect to another page. Use whatever format works for you. This should be typed, not handwritten, and preferably so pretty that you will want to put it on the wall of your office and look at it every day. There are several Timeline templates at this site: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/templates/results.aspx?qu=timeline&ex=2&av=all of project management templates for Microsoft office. There are probably other sources on the web, or you can make your own. This will be submitted electronically, so you may be able to use unconventional sizes or resources to construct the timeline. You may submit a link to an internet site instead of a document. It will be useful to you to be able to carry and show your timeline, so being able to print it is important.

Grades for this portion of the assignment will be based on whether all reasonable tasks are included in timeline and whether the timeline allows a realistic time for beginning each task and allowing for its completion by deadlines. A timeline will be expected to include preliminary tasks associated with major tasks (for example, if applying for a postdoc is on timeline, it would be expected that prior tasks such as researching postdocs and beginning written application would also be on timeline). Grading will include completeness of associated tasks, because it demonstrates thoughtful and realistic thinking by the students. You must include all tasks and deadlines required for completion of PhD program to receive a full grade. Don’t forget to put estimated graduation date at end as your goal! Feel free to include explanations or notes of special circumstances that informed your decisions

Part 1: Procedures in the Physical Sciences: Challenges in Measurements

Identify three (3) specific challenges to making direct measurements in the fields of astronomy, chemistry, physics, or earth science. Describe how scientists have utilized indirect forms of measure to overcome these challenges.
Choose two (2) of the most historically influential tools or techniques in the physical sciences. Explain how these techniques or tools work, and how they helped to advance our understanding of the physical sciences.
Part 2: Procedures in the Physical Sciences: A Survey of Safety

Choose one (1) hazard associated with research in the physical sciences. Discuss how protective gear or equipment might be used to mitigate the hazard, as well as its efficacy.

Analytic essay, documenting your sources in MLA format. Topic? Return to the “isms” of the back of our book (1906-1930) in order to make a case for which piece of visual art.

(a) should be a new cover for NITLyet (b) in so doing, would embody a particular literary theory. That is to say, youmight pick a painting by Picasso that not only would be a good cover for a book titled“Introduction to Literature,” but also would embody the principles of deconstruction. In this case, it might be Picasso’s Woman With a Book in the Norton Simon collection,Pasadena. Explain your choice, both in terms of how it matches our textbook but also, how it predicts or previews or fulfills or embodies one of the literary theory “isms.”
You may draw on any of the traditional visual arts—photography, ceramics, sculpture, or painting—but your choice should be a good book cover (so vertical compositions work best) as well as demonstrating one of our “isms.” Another example might be the 1946 photograph by Ansel Adams, Clouds Above Golden Canyon, Death Valley, California, also in the Norton Simon collection. This attractive, vertical image might be argued toembody a number of ideas, from Jungian archetypes to a blend of New Historicismand Marxism, in that Mr. Adams, unlike some of his female colleagues, was grantedspecial privileges during World War II. When others were prevented from traveling, he was given extra gasoline rationing coupons, extra tire vouchers, and was released fromimmediate wartime service while he made his art. (It’s a great photo, to be sure, but it only happened because he was granted elite status and exempted from restrictions.)At some point in your paper, reproduce your selected art work, crediting its source.
