Identify a belief that you (or someone in your community) think is true.

Present an account of at least one metaphysical account of reality from the assigned readings with support from the course texts and online lectures. For example, you might discuss Plato, Aristotle, or the Cartesian method. Make sure that you include an account of reality and truth and discuss how (and/or whether) human beings are capable of knowing reality with any certainty. For instance, is there a difference between a well-founded opinion and a false one? How are opinions/beliefs related to the truth as such?
Explain how the account of truth set forth by the chosen theory of reality might apply to their belief.

Wilson’s Fences Story: focusing your argument on aspects of the dramatic genre

Choose one of the plays from the reading list in your syllabus (i.e., Ives’s Sure Thing, Sophocles’s Antigone, Wilson’s Fences, Hwang’s M. Butterfly, or Valdez’s Los Vendidos). Once you have chosen a play, compose an essay about that piece, focusing your argument on one of the following aspects of the dramatic genre:

• Dramatic Structure
• Imagery and Symbolism
• Character
• Setting and Atmosphere
• Culture
• Theme

Your essay must include both a thesis which argues your particular claim about the play as well as well-chosen and detailed supporting evidence (i.e., incorporated quotations from the text) to help reinforce your thesis.

Also, to help build the content of your essay, as well as familiarize yourself with researched writing, you will also be required to use at least 3 secondary sources in your paper. While you may use online sources in your paper for additional research, your 3 required secondary sources must be academic sources (e.g., peer-reviewed journals, biographies of the author, scholarly book-length studies, etc.).

Preparation: Review chapters 16-19 for specific discussions of the different aspects of reading and writing about drama, and read chapter 5 for information on researched writing.

Assessment: Your grade will derive from your ability to argue a clear claim/thesis, to support that thesis with specific details and quotations taken from the text, to incorporate secondary sources into your writing, and to organize your thoughts in a way that helps your reader clearly understand your argument. Excellent papers will contain originality and demonstrate critical thought.

Requirements: You should submit an essay 4 full pages in length, typed and double-spaced. All paper options must use Times New Roman font in 12-pt size. Format your paper according to MLA guidelines.
