Individual Strategy Memo about senator ted cruz

Individual Strategy Memo:

For me I will represent senator ted cruz and talk about his opinion and his position of emigration …

The strategy memo is a briefing paper, written by a staff member (me the student) to the person you will be representing at the roundtable (senator ted cruz), analyzing the politics of the position that this person should take and also recommending particular tactics and strategy. Its purpose is to think strategically for your boss. The choices your boss makes — in terms of both style and substance — will depend on your assessment of the likely success of each option, but it will also depend on what goals your boss is trying to achieve from his position on the issue. Greenpeace, for example, wants to spotlight attention to environmental issues, while also maintaining or increasing its high-profile and membership internationally. While it is broadly against genetically modified foods, each decision about Greenpeace’s specific policy position and political strategy has implications for its potential supporters or coalition partners. How should it intervene in a particular issue, such as the Swiss referendum against genetic modification? Would it be better to use very theatrical protest actions, or to adopt a more compromising stance? Would particular frames be more resonant than others? Are there particular sympathetic coalition partners? The memo also has to take into consideration the kinds of opposition that may emerge, for example from the biotechnology industry. Should you try to adopt a position that may be more amenable to the biotech industry but may violate your core values? Is there a way to maintain your core values while still developing a strategy that will stand up to the strength, power, and money of pro-GMO groups?

Your paper should include a statement of goals, an analysis of the political environment (other stakeholders, venues, frames as well as your own organization’s resources), specific strategic recommendations (including the pros and cons), and a description of how your position and the tactics you’re advocating will contribute to your organization’s goals. You should also include the political reasoning for adopting the strategy (ies) you’ve chosen, the allies and the opposition that you anticipate (in terms of their arguments and political strategies.)

This memo should help you to think through the elements of a good political analysis: to define problems specifically, identify relevant actors and their various goals, specify an audience, and propose a strategy to accomplish your own goals. It should also help you to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of particular strategies: to assess alternatives, to meet likely attacks, and to anticipate the repercussions of your actions. As with the research memo, you do not need to cite the class readings directly, but making use of the ideas in relevant sections of the course will improve your paper.
The page limit is 7 pages, double-spaced, normal fonts, not including references. Ingenuity in stretching the page limit will not be rewarded.

Preparing the document for submission
1. Put the document into the “Strategy Memo” folder.
2. Put your name on the paper.

How can leaders effectively manage ‘change’ within an organisation?

Guidance
Consider using one (in-depth case study) or two case studies (in order perhaps to compare and contrast) the response. If so, please ensure that you support these with references to supporting literature.

Further guidance:
This essay requires an appraised discussion on effective change management within organisations and how leaders can satisfactorily manage this change process. This will require consideration of both theoretical perspectives and their application in terms of effectively balancing the needs of the leader and ensuring effective change takes place.

Please make clear the point being made in each paragraph and how this relates to answering the question. After a general discussion of the available management of effective change processes. The essay should be academic in nature and critically address the issue not just superficially. Avoid use of unnecessary headings, but ensure definitive structure.
The essay is to have a clearly defined introduction, main body and conclusion. No need for subtitles. The essay should be VERY ANALYTICAL rather than descriptive.

Do not use website or internet based or online materials as resources or references. Please reference academic books ONLY. Use of academic journals should be limited to 1 source only; all others (22) should be academic books.
The Harvard referencing system should be used for both in-text and end-text referencing. Words quoted verbatim should be in inverted commas, paragraphs or long sentences in an indented tab, etc

Leadership – Foundational and Critical Perspectives

Assignment Question:

Are character ‘traits’ important in understanding the nature of leadership,
and are narcissistic traits among leaders a problem for organizations?

Further Guidance for Students

On the basis of your understanding of the leadership literature, explore the
debates around (1) character ‘traits’ and (2) ‘narcissistic leadership’.
You need to show that you have a good grasp of some of the central ideas in
the leadership literature that are relevant to these topics; have been able
to reflect on this literature; have been able to draw your own conclusion;
and supply good argumentation to support your conclusion.

Approaching the question

Students are reminded that whilst some questions may very evidently refer
to a particular unit they are all designed to span issues across the entire
module. A full answer to the question will require reflection on the issues
that you have encountered throughout the module. It is important to bear in
mind that the content of your answer will depend on the argument that you
wish to put forward in answer to the question and not solely on the
concepts that the question explicitly identifies.

Assessment Criteria
In addition to the criteria outlined above and in the Programme Handbook,
students are expected to demonstrate:
• Knowledge and understanding of the ‘traits’ literature that suggests
that character is relatively fixed; of the literature that suggests that
character is more malleable and may be developed, and that casts
doubt on the traits literature; and of the literature that suggests that
we sometimes over-estimate the significance of leadership when we
look at organizational functioning
• Knowledge and understanding of the literature on narcissistic
leadership: what is it?; under what circumstances, and in what ways
is it a problem?; and are there circumstances in which it is helpful?
• Critical reflection on the literature
• Some knowledge of the wider leadership literature and ability to link
it to your argument

IMPORTANT NOTE: BELOW INSTRUCTIONS MUST BE STRICTLY FOLLOWED AS INSTRUCTED BY THE COURSE ADVISER (The person who will mark this course work). ALL REFERENCES MENTIONED BY THE INSTRUCTOR BELOW MUST BE USED IN THIS COURSE WORK IN ADDITION TO YOUR OWN REFERENCES.

REFERENCES MENTIONED BY THE ADVISER WILL BE ATTACHED IN THIS ORDER AS WELL.

Assignment Instructions per Section by the Course Instructor/ Adviser: (MUST BE STRICTLY FOLLOWED)

Introduction
Define: Leadership, traits and narcissistic leadership or narcissism
Introduce your plan to answer clearly the assignment question
Make it clear that you will engage in critical thinking

Section 1) Traits:
Importance in understanding leadership – what do they contribute to our understanding of leadership?
Traditional traits approach / Great Man view – advantages and limitations, especially limitations. (Van Seters & Field – The Evolution of Leadership Theory)
Are traits fixed or malleable? Can traits be learnt? Born (fixed) versus made (able to develop) debate? Can leadership be taught (Doh, 2003)? Which aspects of leadership can be taught/learnt/developed (Grint, 2007)
Modern traits approach and recent research into traits – how important are they? (Kouzes and Posner – The Credibility Factor; Kirkpatrick & Locke – Leadership – Do traits matter?)
Personality (traits) and leadership, recent research – how important are they? (Bartone et al: Big five personality factors, hardiness, and social judgment as predictors of leader performance)
Strengths and weaknesses of the modern trait approach?
Explore the fact that this is a very “leader-centred” view of leadership and doesn’t consider other factors. Make reference to the “Romance of Leadership” ideas (Meindl et al 1985 – The romance of leadership) about us over-estimating the significance of leadership in organisational success. Contrast this with the findings of Jim Collins around level 5 leadership.

Section 2) Narcissistic leadership:
What are the characteristics of narcissistic leadership? (Rosenthal & Pittinsky 2006 – Narcissistic leadership)
How might these be a problem?
In what ways might narcissistic leadership be helpful? And when might it be needed – if ever?
Toxic triangle that can lead to destructive (including narcissistic) leadership (circumstances that lead to narcissistic or destructive leadership) (Padilla et al 2007 – The toxic triangle)
How can organisations manage narcissistic leaders?
Charismatic leadership – strengths and weaknesses (see Module book and find references)
Encouraging authentic leadership as an antidote to narcissistic leadership (George et al – Discovering Your Authentic Leadership)
Explore socialised versus personalised leadership motivation / pseudo-transformational versus authentic transformational leadership. And why this is more important than mere charisma (see Billl George and Jim Collins – Level 5 Leaders)

SOME TIPS:
Read through ALL the papers I have suggested and the assignment question in mind.
Don’t just give your opinion. Based your arguments on the literature and research and make clear reference to these.
Clearly explore advantages and disadvantages of all key concepts

Make a clear generalization and conclusion.

Page Set-Up:

The assignment should be typed and be formatted for A4 (portrait). A left-hand margin of 25 to 40 mm should be used, with all other margins being 20 mm. Double line spacing should be used for the assignment, except for indented quotations where single spacing may be used. A font size of 12 is required, and you are encouraged to use a clear font design such as Arial, Times New Roman or Courier New. Pages must be numbered consecutively throughout the text, with numbers located centrally at the bottom of each page. Any abbreviations used should be those in normal use. Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory-3

Assessment Write Up – Students will choose one assessment tool. You must choose an instrument or measure that is ranked within the top 55 used by counselors for review.

Once you have chosen your instrument to be reviewed, access both the Tests in Print and Mental Measurement Yearbook electronic databases through the GSU library page. You may also use articles from Psych-Info or Psych-Articles if you like to supplement your information. If you find a more current version of the measure that has been reviewed (e.g., BDI-2 instead of the BDI; WAIS-IV instead of the WAIS), review the most recent version of the measure that has information available on it.

Do not use Wikipedia or other general public sources.

Write up a paper in strict APA format and style (e.g., title page, running head, abstract, reference page, appropriate heading levels, 12 point Times New Roman font, 1 inch margins, etc.), addressing the following questions in full:

1. Background: Provide a brief background of what the instrument is supposed to measure, who developed it, and when it was developed.

2. Development: Describe how the instrument was developed. What was the sampling strategy? How many people were in the norming group? Where were they sampled from? Was expert review, factor analysis, a pilot study, or any other method used in the initial development of the instrument? Explain what they did and what the results of these steps were.

3. Reliability: Provide as much information as you can about the different forms of known reliability for the instrument. What types of reliability have been obtained, what are the reliability values, and how reliable is this instrument?

4. Validity: Provide as much information as you can about the different forms of validity known for this instrument. What forms of validity have been obtained for it, how were these obtained, and what does this tell you about the instrument?

5. Summary: Now briefly summarize your main findings involving the background, development, reliability, and validity of this measure. Based on your findings, would you recommend its use? Why or why not?

Text length will depend of course on the amount of information you find for your chosen instrument, but the body of the paper should generally run about 4-6 pages of content in length. Include title page abstract page and reference page. Total pages for write up will be 7-9 pages.
