Gender & Culture

Paper 3: Essays Considering Gender and Culture

Consider the essays that we have read during this unit (Friedan, Woolf, Wollstonecraft, and
Mead) and Revolutionary Road to formulate a clear and intelligent response using one of the suggestions below.

1. Look back to Revolutionary Road—how would Friedan use April and Frank Wheeler as supports for her arguments in “The Happy Housewife Heroine?”
2. Woolf created the fictional Judith Shakespeare to show how creative women would have been discouraged and even destroyed by society if they lived outside of conventional gender norms. How is April Wheeler’s story like that of Judith Shakespeare? What would Woolf have thought about the fact that April’s tragedy takes place in the 1950s (instead of the 1590s!).
3. How would Mead see the interactions between the Wheelers in relation to her views on the social construct of masculinity? Consider the examples she uses of the different societies she has studied, such as the Arapesh and the Mundugumor. Pay special attention to Frank Wheeler, as he will be your focus. .
4. How would Mary Wollstonecraft see April Wheeler’s life and the ways in which the social construct of femininity has constrained her (even been responsible for her death)?

All essays should use relevant, clear, and well-chosen examples from the film and the essay(s) discussed to support the thesis of the essay. All of the materials used from the essay(s) should have clear and correct MLA-Standard in-text citations that credit the author of the essay (Friedan, Wollstonecraft, or Mead) and page numbers from the textbook where the information was found. Please review the materials that are in previous week’s modules and the “Research Writing Reference” tab for samples and suggestions.

Requirements:

• The first four lines of the first page should be the student’s name, the instructor’s name, the course, and the date. This identifying information will appear on page one only.
• All essays should have a creative and original title.
• All essays should have a clear introduction with a thesis statement, well-supported body paragraphs, and a summative conclusion. All student essays should make appropriate use of the professional essay(s) the students are addressing and demonstrate proper MLA in-text documentation.

Evaluation:
All papers will be evaluated on both content and mechanics. I will be evaluating the focus and scope of the topic you chose, the presentation of clear examples from the essay(s) to illustrate your points, the structure and organization of the essay, the writing style and language, and the mechanics of Standard English and MLA documentation that we must master in academic writing.

Any paper that fails to conform to the MLA manuscript guidelines will be docked ten (10) points.

(2) You will also probably note that many maps of dialects show our area here to be along a linguistic boundary. What examples can you provide that support the notion that we have our own regional dialect here in Cincinnati? (3) How do place and space shape language usage? There has to be specific examples from the books pointing out the pages and the specific examples to correspond to the material being discussed. I would like to use the Blinded by sight since its the most recent one we have read and another book from below to give specific examples.
