This week, we shift from political parties to elections.

What kind of person runs for political office, and how do they actually win? One of the toughest things for students to truly understand about elections is that real, regular people just like us run for office. That’s what makes our representative democracy work. Few people wake up one morning and decide they can be President. Most public officials start as an elected member of a civic club board or a Rotary Club – maybe deciding to run for a truly public office as the trustee of a school district or community collage board of trustees.

Running for office successfully is an inexact science. A lot of your success or failure depends on factors beyond your control. Like any other important project, though, there are things that successful political campaigns usually have in common. Successful campaigns understand how many voters they need, where they’re likely to find them and what issues will interest them. Successful campaigns – especially for local races – depend on lots of personal contact between the candidate and potential voters. Successful campaigns understand the role of money – how to raise it and how to spend it.

Your assignment this week is one that frustrates many of my students, because you can’t just absorb information from the book or from a website and regenerate it in an essay. That’s one of the reasons I like it so much. Though your textbook chapter focuses on national elections, your job this week is to design a winning campaign for one of two actual candidates running for state representative in next week’s election. If you were running their campaign, what would you do?

Yes, I realize you don’t know how to do this. Ask anybody who has ever run for public office – they’ll tell you they didn’t know how to do it either the first time they ran. Somehow, some of them manage to win anyway. Think creatively. Speculate about what might work. Know that while there are certainly some wrong answers, there are no certain right answers about how best to design a campaign for the state legislature. As I mention in the assignment directions, if I asked five campaign professionals to do this assignment, I’d get five totally different campaigns (and they’d charge me a lot of money)

Strategy Assignment – Briefing Paper

Choose one topic to write.

Senior business executives’ time is precious. In line with this you are to produce a short (500 word) briefing paper addressing one of the following strategic issues.

The briefing paper should take the form of a memo to the board of the relevant organisation, and should draw upon your understanding of Strategy course material and any other relevant topics from your degree.

Start out with (1) a short introduction of the company’s current situation (approx. 100w), then provide the executives with (2) an analysis of the industry and relevant competition (approx. 200w), and (3) present your conclusions about the strategic positioning and the potential of the company (approx. 200w).

Your work should be up-to-date, reflect your research skills and include appropriate citations and references to strategic tools and frameworks you are using.

a) The supermarket Wm Morrison has recently committed itself to an ambitious cost-advantage strategy in an effort to defeat more recent entrants to the market such as Lidl and Aldi. Evaluate this approach and discuss whether an established supermarket such as Morrison can be successful by following this approach.

b) In Western Europe the car industry is stagnating due to market saturation and overproduction. Like many other car manufacturers Volkswagen Group (Volkswagen AG) owns a portfolio of car brands. Many of them are produced in the same plants and are targeting similar customer groups (e.g. Seat and Skoda). Discuss whether this strategy makes sense and how Volkswagen Group should position itself in the future.

c) Euro Disney, despite being Europe’s most visited tourist attraction, has faced significant financial problems since its opening in 1992, and it has recently been announced that the company is facing a bailout by Walt Disney, its biggest shareholder. Discuss the company’s position in the market and propose recommendations about how it may position itself to improve its competitiveness and financial position.

d) The privatisation of Royal Mail was argued to be crucial to maintaining the financial viability of the service, given high levels of competition in its industry. The challenge facing the company now is the need to develop and exploit new revenue streams from its value chain whilst maintaining required levels of service. Discuss how the privatised Royal Mail may maintain its competitiveness.

Briefing paper FAQs

Q: How much background on a company should be included in the briefing paper?

A: As you are writing a memo to the executives it’s safe to assume the reader is knowledgeable about the company. If there’s a relevant fact or something more obscure that links up to what you’re saying, feel free to introduce it, but the idea here is that you have a limited amount of time and space to make your point to someone in an organisation. You should use ca. 100w to introduce the current situation of the company. This already includes your assessment of the situation, based upon your research into the topic and understanding of the firm’s strategic position.

Q: What type of formatting should be used?

A: Don’t worry too much about the ‘memo’ format. If you want to use a particular memo format you may, but this exercise is not about following any strict format. It is more important that your presentation is well structured, readable so that we can follow your arguments.
What we are interested in here is that the paper is directed to the company in question and that you dive into your discussion without needing to describe the company!
The memo should consist of three parts:
(1) the situation (see above)
(2) results of your analysis (of the industry, the competition etc). Don’t present too much of the analysis itself (figures graphs, lists), but you need to demonstrate that you have applied frameworks/concepts/tools using the correct terminology in a way that we can follow your arguments.
(3) conclusions on the strategic positioning and the potential of the company. This is basically the recommendation you give to the executives. Make sure it is clearly derived from your analysis and based on facts!

Q: What does it mean to use course material?

A: The idea here is that we are interested in you demonstrating your understanding of material we have covered in the course. We are looking for you to make clear how the topics covered in the course have informed your analysis. For instance, had you done this assignment over the summer, what would be in it now that wouldn’t have been included before? While you do not need to be blatant in indicating what has come from course material, feel free to include a ‘signpost’ if you think a particular reference might be missed.

Q: If I’m using charts, do the words in the chart count against the total word count?

A: No. You are allowed to use charts but these may not contain more than 100 words combined across all charts/tables.

Write a 1750 word page paper on a topic related to the Odyssey. You should select your topic based on its literary value rather than for historical, social, or political values. In other words, this assignment involves an in-depth analysis of at least one source based on its literary merits. I would warn you against summary and biography. Rather, you should focus on things like theme, symbolism, characteristics of a period, etc.. If you had a particularly strong explication you may use this as a foundation for your paper, but you must develop it more fully.

You will find a set of articles listed in the Literary Analysis Assignment section of the course. You will receive the source information (Bibliography) in the same area. The source information will show you how to format your selected article on your Works Cited page of your paper. You must select, copy, and read one of the articles. You will need to write an analysis of the idea in the article for your paper.

For your Thesis Proposal you need to write a Thesis Statement (more than one sentence). You should be clear about what you will specifically argue in your paper. Next, you should write a 500-750 word summary of the academic source you selected. Summarize the most relevant ideas in regard to your thesis.Post to the Thesis Proposal Forum. (5pts)

For this essay you’ll put one of the TED Talks from the previous project into conversation with another text of your choice. that also involve a relevant contemporary problem or question – this time one with ethical implications. You’ll summarize and analyze the authors’ purposes and main ideas, create connections between the two texts, and then synthesize them into a new perspective of your own. As the authors of your textbook point out in Chapter 8, analysis/synthesis is an intellectual activity you’ll encounter in many academic settings (181). In fact, the foundation for thoughtful and effective research begins with demonstrating your awareness of a larger conversation and beginning to claim your own place in it.

Instructions:
1. Select a TED Talk from the three we worked on in the previous project (you can either choose a new talk or use your Essay 1 selection).
2. Select a second text that deals with a similar topic thread, or idea outlined in your chosen TED Talk. Here, you might use another TED talk, an online article, a YouTube video, a speech, etc. (the text should be between 4-6 pages). The text might be aligned with, opposed to, or offer a new perspective on the topic, thread or idea at hand.
